Hemp Fabrics 101

When it comes to eco-friendly fabrics, hemp is at the top of the list. Hemp fabrics not only come with numerous comfort benefits but are made from one of the most sustainable fibers.
What is Hemp?
Hemp fiber comes from the broken-down stalk of hemp, a plant that can grow in virtually any climate on Earth. Hemp plants have a deep root system, penetrating up to six feet into the soil. This helps reduce erosion and soil loss while allowing for several crop rotations. Because of its natural resistance to pests and disease, hemp can be grown without the use of harsh chemicals. Hemp also requires less water, provides high yields, absorbs more carbon, and returns more nutrients to the earth than many other species. Due to its versatility and numerous sustainability benefits, hemp fiber is becoming more and more popular in everyday household items and textiles.
Comfort Benefits of Hemp Fabric
Hemp fabric is often used for textiles such as clothing, curtains, and bedding. Some of the most important benefits it provides include:
- Natural thermoregulation (keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer)
- Moisture-wicking properties
- Natural hypoallergenic properties
- Long-lasting durability
- Lightweight & breathable feel
- Resistance to pilling
What Does Hemp Fabric Feel Like?
Hemp fabric often takes on a more relaxed feel that gets softer each time you wash it. It has a slightly matte texture that is perfectly balanced for year-round use.
The idea that hemp fabric is scratchy most likely comes from experience with hemp fiber products of the past. When harvested directly from the stalk of the plant, hemp includes an organic polymer known as lignin that makes plants more “woody” and fabric more rough. However, the current process of working with hemp removes the lignin to create a softer, more skin-friendly feel. Once processed, the hemp fabric feels much like cotton, with added comfort benefits.
