More Plants, Longer Life?

A global study by the University of Sydney found that countries with higher consumption of plant-based proteins like chickpeas, tofu, and peas tend to have longer adult life expectancies. The research analyzed food and demographic data from 101 countries between 1961 and 2018, adjusting for wealth and population size.
Specifically, the investigators determined that nutritional environments of plant-based proteins were linked to longer lifespans in adults. Countries like India, with more plant protein availability, showed higher adult longevity compared to meat-heavy countries like the U.S. The study supports previous research linking high animal protein intake to chronic diseases, while plant-based diets are associated with lower disease risk and greater longevity. The researchers highlight the importance of protein source not just for health, but also for environmental sustainability.
