A survey of 2607 U.S. adults found that less than half of them knew that a label reading “Best If Used By” means only that food quality may deteriorate after that date. And only 24 percent of the respondents knew that “USE BY” on the label means it isn’t safe to eat the food afterward. If you’re not sure about how long a food or beverage remains fresh or edible, you can check the FoodKeeper online or download the FoodKeeper App, which is designed to promote understanding of food and beverage storage to maximize freshness and quality. You also can check “The Refrigerator and Freezer Storage Chart” on page 4 of the FDA’s Food Facts brochure, which provides more information about which products to refrigerate or freeze and for how long.
