Could Vitamin D Help Protect Against Melanoma?
Vitamin D plays an important role in many aspects of supporting health and preventing disease. Now, findings from a recent study add to our understanding of how this vitamin affects skin cancer risk. Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland examined 498 adult patients with an increased risk of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or melanoma and collected information about their medical history, including their use of vitamin D supplements.
They determined that there were significantly fewer cases of melanoma among the people who regularly supplemented with vitamin D compared with those in the group who didn’t take it. In fact, the risk of developing melanoma was more than halved in people who regularly took vitamin D. These results are in line with previous studies on this topic. One unanswered question involves the optimal dose of supplemental vitamin D to reduce risk. The researchers hope future research will help pinpoint that information.
