Form Of Yoga Linked To Better Sleep

Yoga nidra, a form of yoga centered on mindfulness and deep conscious relaxation, performed while lying down, may enhance sleep quality and cognitive abilities, even in beginners. That’s the conclusion of recent research by investigators at the Armed Forces Medical College in India, which involved 41 people who were new to the practice. The volunteers practiced yoga nidra guided by a 20-minute audio recording during the daytime and then had their sleep tracked during the night.
The researchers found that after two weeks, the participants had better sleep efficiency (the ratio between the time a person spends asleep, and the total time dedicated to sleep), higher percentages of delta-waves during deep sleep, and improved cognitive performance in tasks related to memory, attention, abstraction, emotional recognition, and spatial learning. These findings align with previous research associating delta-wave sleep with better sleep quality, attention, and memory.
