Alzheimer's Prevention Part 2: Supplements
Tip of the Day

In last Monday's Daily Tip we covered somelifestyle changes that can help prevent Alzheimer’s. In addition to pursuing these activities and a healthy diet, supplemental nutrients may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. If you or a loved one has Alzheimer's or is at an increased risk, consider the following supplements:

  1. Take a daily low-dose aspirin. Some studies link the use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) with reduced risk of Alzheimer's.
  2. Supplement with vitamins C and E. A recent study at Johns Hopkins University suggested that vitamins C and E taken together might slow the progression of Alzheimer's.
  3. Use a daily multivitamin that provides adequate levels of folic acid and other B vitamins. They help the body reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid formed by the breakdown of animal protein that, at elevated levels in the bloodstream, has been linked to heart attack and stroke, and more recently with increased risks of Alzheimer's.
  4. Try turmeric, the yellow spice in American mustard and Indian curry. People in India have an unusually low incidence of Alzheimer’s, and epidemiologic studies suggest the regular consumption of turmeric as part of their daily diet may be a strong contributor to their mental health.

Make sure you talk with your physician before taking any medications, including over-the-counter drugs, and visit Dr. Weil’s Vitamin Advisor for your own complimentary assessment.
