Chiropractic

Chiropractic education.
Many people simply have no idea of the depth and breadth of chiropractic education. The modern chiropractor has considerable expertise with backs, muscles, and bones. But chiropractors are also trained to recognize other general health care problems, to give general health advice, and refer you to medical physicians when indicated. The typical chiropractic curriculum (http://www.nuhs.edu/show.asp?durki=507) is about four and one-half years after completing required undergraduate college pre-requisites, and includes many of the same courses (http://www.nuhs.edu/tour/default.htm) medical students also take. The medical and chiropractic professions differ because medical physicians go on to residencies and to serve in additional specialty clinical training.

The National Institutes of Health and chiropractic.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) started to investigate chiropractic and other "alternative medicines" through its National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (then named the Office of Alternative Medicine) in 1992. Eventually, the NCCAM published the report Chiropractic and Its Use in Treating Low-Back Pain (available on-line at http://nccam.nih.gov/health/chiropractic/), which provides a well-organized and documented summary of chiropractic and its usefulness for back pain.
