After several hours of research, I've pretty much decided on a latex mattress, pure organic latex, not latex with synthetic latex mixed in. Does anyone here have one? If so, what brand and how do you like it? I think we'll like it very well, but I don't know anyone who has one, so there is a little doubt in my mind. Some of the big mattress makers are starting to come out with some, but i don't trust that they're all natural as claimed. I'll stick with the companies who have done it right to begin with. We almost got a sleep number bed, but canceled after I found out they have a plastic frame, which would outgas. I get ill from the outgassing of man made items. The fire retardant is causing people problems too. I get to feeling bad just being in a mattress store, so I can't imagine sleeping on one all night.
I have a natural laxex mattress. Interestingly enough I did quite a bit of research before buying. What I decided upon was to get the 100% natural latex. I decided on getting three layers...one firm, one medium and one soft. The beauty of buying the three layers is that if one fails all you need to do is replace it not the whole bed.
There are several companies out there some more expensive than others. Here are a few to look at. Be sure to choose one that has a zip cover that enclosed the three of four layers that you buy. That way you can wash it.
I would never go back to a mattress again. Nor would I ever go to anything other than natural latex. I've had pillow top, waterbeds, latex talalay and 100% natural latex is the best. The memory foam beds off-gas and are uncomfortable if you like a cool environment to sleep in at night.
I chose not to encase the three layers inside a conventional mattress. Mine is just the zipper cotton cover so I am sleeping right on the latex. It is dreamlike !! Good luck.
Thank you so much for your reply. By the way, talalay is natural foam. It and dunlop are the 2 types. They differ in the way they're made.
Savvyrest is probably the one we'll go with since we can try it out before we buy. The store is 2 hours away, but worth it to try it out first. I agree with the removable top not only for washing it, but for being able to change the foam layers around. The store we'll go to will change the foam around until we find what feels best to us. It's nice to think it can be changed in the future if we ever need to also. I can't wait to be rid of our spring mattress!
I layed on a Temperpedic once and didn't care for it, but the first latex one I tried felt very good right away and the bonus of no smelly chemicals is a big plus since I don't tolerate any of those fumes.
What brand did you go with? If you don't want to answer that, it's fine. Thank you again!
I forget to add a link to the company I actually bought from. It was FoamSource. I almost bought from SleepEZ but FS had a killer sale the day I bought it. If memory serves me right, all 100% natural latex mattresses are made by the same company, Latex International, Inc. Be sure that wherever you buy your mattress it is certified as being made from that company. FoamSource actually provides a certification label right on their website:
I went to the trouble of calling Latex International and asking them who they recommended and confirmed that they produced for various retialers I was interested in. In my case, all I was getting was the three latex layers and a zippered velour cotton cover. So, other than the cover, the only thing that mattered was the price because all retailers were buying, or having their mattresses made, from Latex International.
Savvy was pretty expensive as I remember it. There is something to be said for being able to drive to that retailer and feel the latex layers. I'd ask Savvy if their mattresses are made by Latex Intl. If so, there is no difference between them and other retailers short of the cover or container that house the layers.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
How can I buy a mattress without first lying on it?
It’s easier than you may think. Years ago, a study found that the average time a person spends lying on a mattress in a store is less than two minutes. That’s a very short period of time to determine if a mattress is right for you. Your Lifekind® mattress is custom made to meet your precise characteristics of height, weight, age, and sleeping position, as well as several other factors. After an in-depth interview with one of our highly trained Product Specialists, we make a recommendation. We stand behind that recommendation with the best 90-day, one-time Comfort Exchange and Pillow Top Loaner programs in the organic bedding industry.
I have one of their Trio (three layers in an organic, zippered cover) matresses on one of their sustainably produced solid wood platform frames. I've had it for over four years and I love it.
Congratulations on your decision to purchase an organic, nontoxic bed.
By the way, Lifekind generally has a major sale in January. Get on their mailing list to receive notice.
I also bought a Talalay mattress with 3 layers for my back problem and am very happy with it. The company let me keep exchanging the different layers until I was satisfied (though I did have to pay for the shipping).
I did look into the Lifekind beds. My only complaint is that I can't find out a base price on the site to compare to others I'm considering. I still like the idea of trying it out first too. I know people order it sight unseen, but I'd rather see it first. Plus, if I have to exchange a layer, I could avoid shipping costs most likely.
An all organic one is important to me since I have multiple chemical sensitivities.
I will report back with what we get. Thanks again everyone.
