I have a friend that was just diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease.  What can he do to slow the disease process?

Thank you,

Barbara Meek-Fuller

Hello,

My brother was diagnosed with ALS approx. 3 years ago and I was asked for his regimen on an ALS forum.  His detioration has slowed down tremendously. This is what I wrote.....

"I had been asked to post a regimen that has helped to retard the progress in my brothers own case. This is his regimen and I am not advocating anything, simply relaying what has worked for him.

Lifestyle:

Organic foods whenever possible. ( I know it's pricey)

"The Okinawa Program" book is a good guide.

Staying well Hydrated.

Light resistance training, never to fatigue. (I suggested Yoga to him. Perhaps some PALS out there have some experience with it?)

3x a week Infra Red Sauna.

Supplements and Meds:

Aminos Acids 30 pills a day

CQ 10 3 pills a day 600 mg total for the day

Milk Thistle in the morning 2 1000 mg a day

Celebrex

DHEA 50 mg a day

Pregnenalone 1 pill a day 30 mg

DMAE 4 pills a day

Flax Seed Oil

Fish Oil

Mealtonin

Riluzole

Lithium"

Many Other treatments have been tried over the years, unfortunately there are many charlatans out there so this is the regimen he wanted me to put out there. This has been the most beneficial for him.

Hope someone out there can be helped by this.

Greetings!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for responding.  This is a very difficult disease to handle.  How did you decide how many mg's of each vitamin to give?  Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope your brother is doing well.  My friend is only 40 years old.  Can you recommend a book to read on this disease?  I have read so much on the internet.  It gets rather confusing.  There doesn't seem to be anything positive.

Thanks again....Barb

Hello Barb,

Forgive the late response I don't frequent these boards.

The supplements and dosages were given to him by the various alternative and mainstream doctors he has been seeing.  You know he hasn't mentioned any specific ALS books just books like The Okinawan Project and other books on nutrition. I'll ask and let you know if does suggest anything.

I know there is no positive news out there but with things like combining Riluzole and Lithium that have come out, there are positive things happening.  Conventional medicine basically prepares you to fade away but there are alternatives.

Good Luck and let me know how it is going.

Hi!  William,

Thank you for your response.  I certainly appreciate any information I can gather.Sean is rather distraught at this time as he is just 40 years old with a wife and two little boys.

I hope this finds your brother doing well.  Yes, any information he is willing to share will be just great.  If you find out about any ALS books to read I would certainly appreciate knowing.

Thanks again and God Bless your brother and you.

Barb
