I bought a refridgerated kind of probiotic and have since read in a couple of places that those may not be so good.    both articles said dont' buy that kind and don't buy the ones that say  "at the time of manufacture.." a certain amount  of organisms are guaranteed.   Please advise.  thanks!

 Dr. Weil says

Probiotics are products containing the helpful bacteria (usually Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium) that normally inhabit the human digestive tract. Most of these "friendly" bacteria occur naturally in cultured milk products, such as yogurt with active cultures or acidophilus milk. You should consider taking probiotic foods or supplements whenever you're on antibiotics, which can wipe out intestinal bacteria indiscriminately, including those that help keep the digestive system functioning normally and may support immune system function. Start taking probiotics twice a day with meals as soon as you start taking antibiotics and continue for a few days after you finish. Look for brands containing Bacillus coagulans (BC-30) or Lactobacillus GG in liquid or capsule form. The dose is one tablespoon of the liquid culture or one to two capsules with meals unless the label directs otherwise. Probiotics are also an effective treatment for diarrhea in children, travelers' diarrhea, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome and vaginal yeast infections.

I used to suffer from horrible, horrible Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I mean: I had reached the point where I could not digest ANYTHING. After each lunch, it was awful. I was given several rounds of PPI like AXID, etc..., which only made matters progressively worse and worse and worse for me.

But  I am currently free of this troublesome health issue, not because of probiotics in the form of pills, but thanks to the addition of daily portions of fermented vegetables to my diet (sauerkraut, fermented beets, fermented carrots).

I did try probiotic pills. They worked a little bit (just a small improvement in my bloating, nothing really significant).

I have also added to my diet these types of yogurt, which you can only get from health food stores:

http://www.traderspointcreamery.com/ (best yogurt I have ever tasted; made from the milk of grassfed cows)

http://www.stonyfield.com/ (also absolutely delicious)

To give you an idea of my success: I am currently able to eat BEANS with cauliflower and broccoli without experiencing any bloating at all. I know this is hard to believe, but it is my true story.
