yes, spironolactone and birth control pills are a common recommendation for younger women with thinning hair. not the most holistic approach though. you should think about see an endocrinologist to rule out thryoid issues and have your hormone levels checked.
I just read this and realize its not a new problem...that you have always had thinner hair. Actually, if you are just looking for a cosmetic fix have you ever tried hair powder? Bumble and bumble make a "Dry shampoo/hairpowder" spray that actually makes the hair feel thicker and you don't have to shampoo as often. You can buy it online
I have always had fine thin hair too. When I found out my thyriod was just a bit off ( not enough for meds) I started to take kelp and that did help some. Now that I am into menopause my hair has gotten thicker and wavey too. So there is hope!
Seeing your post I just have to ask you - are you taking anything during menopause that is causing your hair to get thicker & wavy? I thought menopause thinned your hair.
The reason I ask is perhaps there is hope for me after all! I have baby fine, thin hair (nothing wrong with me, it's just the way it is in our family). I'm 54 and have noticed that during menopause I have alot more coming out when I shampoo, anything I have read seems to say that menopause thins your hair. I am taking some hair vitamins; but am not sure if I am noticing anything or not.
Please respond to this post - I am very curious and interested!
My sister had thinning hair fron medications and was able to get her hair back to normal with a supplement that had Biotin as it's main ingredient. Sorry -don't have the recommended amount, but with some research you should be able to find more information. Also-I have had some good results by using oatstraw in one of the herbal drinks I make, Hibiscus Tea. Oatstraw is very high in Silica and in my experience, will actually make your hair stand up higher from your scalp. You can get Oat Straw in most health food stores and it can be used a a base for just about any herbal tea or drink. The important thing to remember is that it must be boiled untill it drops to the bottom of the saucepan which is about twenty minutes or so. Turn off the heat to see if the straw drops. This indicates that the silica has been removed from the straw. I use a handful in each quart of water or so. The tea by itself is sort of tasteless and non descript so it's best to add something else to it. To make the Hibiscus tea which is a wonderful refreshing drink in itself, I add a handful of dried Hibiscus flowers to the strained Oat Straw water after it has cooled slightly and let that steep for 20 minutes or so. I then sweeten it with agave syrup.
I have fine hair also, and I use Jason Thin to Thick shampoo and conditioner about once a week. It works great and it smells nice, too. Hope this helps.
I've also always had thin hair. But, when it starts falling out more than it usually does (for me, it's during the fall season), the only thing that helps me is Nisim shampoo (www.nisim.com). I've tried a hundred other things which did not work but were a complete waste of money. But this shampoo is great. My 43 year old husband loves it, too.
I have been using Henna from Yemen for a couple of years know and I just love it. My hair is in so much better shape and thicker. But DO NOT GET IT FROM THE BEAUTY SUPPLY, that has stuff in it that is not good for you. Go to the web site Henna for Hair. They have some great product, even Cassia, just for no color but great conditioning.
I too have fine, thin hair. I also have one of Dr. Weil's books .. in it he suggests taking 500mg of black currant oil or primrose oil (both contain 40 mg of GLA) until improvement .. my hair has improved A LOT in texture, shine, manageability and apears 'thicker' and my natural curl has 'returned'! I am staying on it for life! The ingredient that makes the difference is GLA. Carlson's new salmon oil also has GLA. I take one capsule with breakfast and one with lunch. An additional suggestion is to find a good stylist and see them regularly for your 'cut' .. even 'thin' hair can get 'heavy' and weigh down your hair style. Be careful on products that add too much weight too. I use Aveda "Be Curly" shampoo, condition and styling products. I also have found that spritzing my hair with plain water brings out the curl.(I also add a little essential oil (Neroli) for fun and fragrance to the spritzer.) Good luck. Let me know how it works our for you! BJ
