Myself and my husband are in the market for a mattress, and although our budget is small, I am concerned about the flame resistant chemicals that apparently all mattresses are treated with. Does anybody on this forum have any suggestions regarding a economical non-synthetic, or non-chemically treated mattress? I Thanks in advance folks.
i read that natural latex mattress is the healthiest choice. there are some that are processed with the use of chemicals, but you can also find a 100% natural one. prices vary greatly, do your research.

Hi there! What luck, as I have been looking into this for a LONG time too, so here is what I have found so far that I hope helps...
If your budget is small, IKEA actually makes a latex mattress that isnt treated with any of the chemicals you are worried about, and they are affordable! If you want something a little more luxurious that is a lot more costly, you can search for the new mattress made by Danny Seo and distributed through Simmons and JC Penney. It actually is made of latex also and isn't treated with any of the chemicals. I think the price point is about $1600 for a queen mattress, so yes, it is definitely more expensive. Other companied that look really promising include Savvy Rest and Keetsa, both of which are highly regarded and vary in price.
Again, good luck and I hope this helps you in your search!
Ikea doesn't use the flame retardant PBDE that is so toxic in any of it's products. That's why I only by furniture from them these days, because of their commitment to health and the environment. They also have latex mattresses.
I bought a very expensive Tempurpedic mattress for myself, and a natural latex mattress for the guest room. Guess where I prefer to sleep...in the guest room. The natural latex mattress not only is more comfortable and less expensive but it's made from a natural, renewable resource. I believe it's less toxic than most other mattresses made from synthetic material.
Absolutely! Four years ago I too began researching and shopping for a non-toxic, comfortable and non-synthetic mattress. After much research, I decided to purchase an all natural 100% latex mattress. Then my challenge became where to buy so after several days of cyberspace shopping, I purchased my mattress and 2"soft talalay mattress topper from foamorder.com. Their prices were quite reasonable and the customer service I received was outstanding. I am so happy I bought this bed! Marianne
Check out Denver Mattress www.denvermattress.com. If they don't have a store near you, they will ship certain products. They carry a 100% latex mattress. Also, instead of using flame retardant chemicals on the mattresses, they put a layer of Kevlar on them. They make their own line of mattresses and sell them directly to the customer so they are reasonably priced.
I wanted an organic mattress too. After exhaustive research and price comparisons, I bought from (and really recommend) Lifekind in California (www.lifekind.com). My Natural Rubber "Euro" organic mattress and it has made a world of difference in my life and health -- it was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but when it's your health, you just have to do it. Their mattresses are made of all organic materials with NO chemical flame retardants -- they use wool in the quilting instead and it meets all the federal flame-resistant requirements.
Check out their website: http://www.lifekind.com/catalog/mattress_materials.php for tons of information about organic materials, certifications, allergies, "chemical" beds and all the scary stuff that's in them and a really useful chemical glossary -- it's good to know what's in all your products.
You can also call their 800 number to get a free catalog of beds and other natural things they sell like bedding and towels and soaps, or to talk their really nice (and knowledgeable) customer service people.
I was so happy with my new mattress I bought another Lifekind one for my retired parents -- after 2 months, Mom swears her fibromyalgia is a bit better and Dad says his golf game has improved. :) Buy an organic mattress -- it's truly worth every cent. Plus, Lifekind guarantees theirs for 20 years -- so it's a great investment in your health, and great peace of mind.
** Note: CA law requires fire retardant mesh be put on organic mattresses sold (only) to customers in CA, unless you have a note from a doctor or chiropractor saying no (my note was easy to get).
