Good question. There are recipes for homemade soymilk and tofu. I am considering buying an appliance for this purpose, but haven't tried it myself. Here is a link to an appliance and the site also has recipes:
After reading about carrageenan on Dr. Weil's site I found Westsoy unsweetened vanilla organic. One thing I noticed is that here in the midwest in supermarkerts I don't think they move as much as health food stores. I have found some that the expiration date was last year, something to look out for. I did find one other one without it, but didn't make a note of the name. There are a few out there.
For anyone who is interested, I recently tried Organic Edensoy Extra, once I verified that Kombu, while it is seaweed, is not at all related to carrageenan. The carrageenan gives products a smooth, creamy taste, which is why Silk is so good (their chocolate flavor gets along without it, but the rest all have it), but Kombu also gives stuff a rich flavor - and this stuff is pretty good. It is also fortified, so I am happy about that, since the Westsoy Low Fat Plain I have been drinking (and really like, too) is not fortified. So, this Organic Edensoy Extra is a good alternative, and while it is more expensive than the West Soy, you can get it by the case on Amazon and it is not too bad. With two of us drinking it, 27 cartons at a time is not too much. My digestive system can tolerate milk again, but then I noticed I had started to break out again (which was a problem all my life, but had cleared up when I had eliminated milk). I dropped milk again a few weeks ago and my skin is better again.
Thank's for the information, I'll look for that. You must pay a lot for shipping ordering a case from Amazon, do you have a Health Food Store or a Co-op near you that you could get it from?
Shipping was free because it was over $25, and comes from Amazon - or else that would have driven the price up a lot! They do also carry this in our local grocery store, but it is more expansive than the other carrageenan free brand I was getting, which was also not fortified. Ordering on line, with the free shipping, brings the price down to a little cheaper than the other stuff. And it lasts long enough that we can use it before it goes bad. We will have to store it, so if you are very tight on space, this might not be the best answer..
