I have killer cramps for a day and a half every month. The herbs that I love and are very effective - a tincture of Cramp Bark works like a charm. Found online or at any good health food store. I mix 30-50 drops in a little warm water with honey. Read up on it, I take it every 15 - 30 minutes when I need too. Really works and to that I add the tincture Chasteberry.

It's a great combo.

I use an OTC at night to ensure that I get a full nights sleep! I use a 1/2 Aleve tablet at night, for 2 nights (with food). The key is to start the pills or herbs BEFORE cramps start. Once the cramps are in full swing, it's much harder to pull back the pain!

I know how tough painful periods are - hope this helps!

I take Milkthistle three times a day.  It DEFINITELY helped me.  You can buy it just about anywhere (Walmart, Drugstores).  It helps to keep your liver functioning properly and REALLY, REALLY helped my pain from menustration.

I recently discovered that raspberry tea helps get rid of my cramps. I have a lifelong severe history of menstrual pain due to endometriosis and fibroids, etc.

I am close to menopause now, and my cramps are not as severe as they used to be, so I don't know if this tea would help with the extreme pain, but so far, when I've drunk it for moderate cramps, it has helped. The chasteberry is supposed to work, and there are other teas, as well.

you should also consider calcium and magnesium, and B-vitamins as well as omega 3 oils. I take fish oil capsules and also, use alot of flaxseed oil and powder. I put the powder on my cereal. I've heard the omega 3's help with inflammation and pain.

I really love many herbal teas, and I enjoy chamomile for cramps and anxiety along with other uses.

My understanding of the milk thistle, is it's great for the liver, but personally I don't understand how that one could help with cramps.

Hello,

I drink Chamomile tea and it really works for me. I drink a 2-3 cups during my period to help my cramps, bloating, and all the other pain that I endure. It calms my cycle and helps the pain go away. Plus, it helps me sleep relaxed when pain during this time of the month is at it's worst. Try it! :)

The liver helps rid the body of estrogen.  Estrogen and alcohol  utilize the same liver components for breakdown.  If a woman drinks and/or has a high estrogen load, liver functions may become suppressed.  The milk thistle would help the liver do its job more efficiently.   Excess estrogen in the body  can cause many menstrual problems.  Another good way to help the body get rid of estrogen is to eat cruciferous vegetables (brocolli, cabbage, kale, collard greens, brussel sprouts, etc.)  I eat one serving per day  the week before my menses so that my estrogen drop isn't so drastic.  It is quick fluctuations in hormone levels that  cause problems like PMS, headaches, cramps, bloating, etc.

I started taking Evening Primrose Oil several years ago. It takes about 30-60 days to actually become effective against the pain of cramps and bloating. But, once it is in your system, it cuts back dramatically against it.  I have severe (debilitating) periods and this has been incredibly effective in allowing me to continue with day to day activities.

As an added bonus, it also helps maintain a clear complexion. I tend to break out just before my period - but it's minimal now.  And the EFA's in Evening Primrose Oil are a great addition to your diet.  You can get them just about anywhere.

GigiB:

Thank you for the info on the liver/estrogen connection. I had no idea, obviously. That is very interesting. I do actually have liver disease and that explains alot.  I also have a chronic headache problem which I believe is related to my liver issues. I also have menstrual migraines from hormonal fluctuations.

So you may have really helped me with this knowledge. Thanks again.

There are other things that can be helpful for liver function besides milk thistle.  Artichokes are a relative to milk thistle.  Try  one meal with artichoke per week.  Also, chamomile, chichory, and dandelion root are helpful for liver function.  Don't forget about beets they are also good for liver function.  I drink chamomile tea many nights before bed.  Another drink that is good for liver function is coffee.  I am not sure of how it helps the liver, but coffee is highly recommended for helping with cirrhosis of the liver (due to alcohol consumption).

I am glad I could be of some help.  I changed many things in my diet about 8 months ago and the most important was the cruciferous veggies the week before menses.  I haven't had the migraines that I used to have at the start and end of each period like I have had since puberty.  Trust me I tried everything and I am amazed that such a little change can have such great effects.  I only wish I had figured this out long ago.  Ground flax seed also helps in regulating estrogen.  I have a tablespoon per day.

thank you very much for additional liver health info. I do drink chamomile every day and at least one spoon of flaxseed already.

And something I've wondered about milk thistle...I wish I knew if it counteracts with any prescription meds I take?  Just because I am new to the use of milk thistle.
